Description
Lefler and Urban's colour illustrations for Grimm's Marchen (1905 or earlier)   A set of 12 blank Greeting Cards showing the suite of colour illustrations for this very rare vintage publication     The current offering is for a set of 12 blank Greeting Cards showing the entire suite of colour illustrations produced by Lefler and Urban for Grimm's Marchen (Grimm's Fairy Tales).   Grimm's Marchen contains wonderful examples of Jugendstil (the German Art Nouveau movement) illustrations from Lefler and Urban. The pair's masterful interpretation of tales from the Brothers Grimm is an absolute joy to behold and, as may be expected from Lefler and Urban, the illustrations are sumptuously decorated with applied gold and silver. It believed that the illustrations for Grimm's Marchen later formed the basis of another Lefler and Urban rarity, Marchen Kalender 1905.   1st Edition copies of Grimm's Marchen are extraordinarily rare and thus, expensive. Sales rarely occur, but when they are offered for sale on the international market, prices are known to exceed US$3000.     The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards   Schneewitchen (Snow White) Die Kleine Seejungfrau (The Little Mermaid)   Aschenbrödel (Cinderella) Hänsel und Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) Das Gänsemädchen (The Goose Girl) Marienkind (Our Lady's Child; or, Mary's Child) Schwan kleb'an (Swan, hold on) Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot (Snow White and Rose Red)   Gevatter Tod (The Godfather's Death) Der Froschkönig (The Frog Prince)   Rapunzel (Rapunzel) Dornröschen (Little Briar Rose; or, Sleeping Beauty) These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.   Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by Lefler and Urban are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer).   Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope.           On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Heinrich Lefler and Joseph Urban for Grimm's Marchen. The art of Lefler and Urban Heinrich Lefler (1863-1919) and Joseph Urban (1872-1933) are among the leading artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Their influence was most notable through Germany's Jugenstil movement (the term applying to the Art Nouveau movement in that region). Among their contemporaries - on either side of the Atlantic - were artists including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogány, Maxfield Parrish, Harry Clarke and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen').   Lefler and Urban were artists - and brothers-in-law - who often worked in collaboration and also founded the Hagenbund (an exhibiting society similar to the Secessionists. Lefler was a painter and Urban was a skilled architect, book illustrator, exhibit designer, interior decorator and set designer.   Throughout their careers, the pair collaborated on a number of illustrated books, in addition to designed for more than 20 theatrical productions.   In the second decade of the 20th Century, Urban emigrated to the United States where he established a reputation in set design for such productions as the Boston Opera Company, the Ziegfield Follies and the Metropolitan Opera. At one time, he was Art Director for William Randolph Hearst's Cosmopolitan Studios. He also created landmark architecture, including the Paramount Theatre Building, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida and the New School and Hearst Magazine Building in New York.     Spirit of the Ages   We expect that, like us, you will be captivated by the beauty, power and symbolism of these objects.
