Description
Kay Nielsen's colour illustrations for Hansel and Gretel: And Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm (1925)   A set of 12 blank Greeting Cards showing the suite of colour illustrations for this very rare vintage book     The current offering is for a set of 12 blank Greeting Cards showing the entire suite of colour illustrations produced by Kay Nielsen for a suite of illustrations to accompany Hansel and Gretel: And Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm.   Nielsen's contribution to Hansel and Gretel: And Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm are superb examples of high Art Nouveau and are typically lush with sensual composition and extraordinary detail. In the larger format - and showing the illustrations with the original integrated ornamental borders - these are particularly rare illustrations, with less than 2,100 copies published in the English-language 1st editions.   When 1st Edition copies of Hansel and Gretel: And Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm are offered on the international market, sales may occur for more than US$3,000.     The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards   Rumpelstiltskin (Frontispiece) The little man dashed his right foot so deep into the floor that he was forced to lay hold of it with both hands to pull it out Hansel and Gretel They saw that the cottage was made of bread and cakes The Six Swans When she had concluded, the King was overcome with joy     The Fisherman and his Wife The the fisherman went home and found his wife sitting upon a throne, and she had three great crowns upon her head   Rosebud Rosebud looked so beautiful he stooped down and gave her a kiss     Snowdrop They wrote her name upon it, in golden letters, and that she was a king's daughter The Goose Girl Blow, breezes, blow! Let Curdken's hat go! Blow, breezes, blow! Let him after it go! Cherry; or, The Frog Bride Within sat his old friend the frog   The Valiant Tailor The unicorn, rushing against the tree, fixed its horn so fast in the trunk that it could not draw it out The Juniper Tree A kind of cloud came from the tree, and in the middle was a burning fire, and out of the fire came a pretty bird Catskin She managed to skip out so slyly that the King did not see where she was gone   The Two Brothers Then the dragon made a dart at the hunter, but he swung his sword round and cut off three of the beast's heads   These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.   Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by Nielsen are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer).   Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope.           On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Kay Nielsen for Hansel and Gretel: And Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm. The art of Kay Nielsen Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) is considered among one of the leading artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among his contemporaries - on either side of the Atlantic - were artists including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogány, Maxfield Parrish, Harry Clarke and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen').   His illustrations from East of the Sun and West of the Moon are among his masterpieces and were produced in 1914. Following World War I, he produced other great works, including Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen, Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories from the Brothers Grimm and Red Magic.   Nielsen also prepared illustrations for titles that were not fated for publication in books including images from his "Book of Death" suite and the illustrations for the tragic tale of Pierrot. Other Nielsen illustration were specially commissioned for The Illustrated London News, such as those that accompanied Perrault in Powder and Patch: Famous and Familiar Fairy Stories in their Proper Guise. Another three images appear to have been prepared in 1914 to accompany a version of The Monk of Fife - a romance of the days of Jeanne D'Arc (St Joan or Joan of Arc). A further suite of images was prepared prior to 1923 for a version of A Thousand and One Nights that was not published due to scarce resources in Denmark following World War I.   Nielsen's illustrations are rich with Art Nouveau influences, in addition to incorporating design elements from other traditions. Art Nouveau and Meiji Era aesthetes (most noticeably in the form of what may be an homage to Hokusai's "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa") are clearly shown throughout East of the Sun and West of the Moon. His other work is similarly lavish while adopting slightly softer methods that are, to some degree, reminiscent of his earliest published work, In Powder and Crinoline.     Spirit of the Ages   We expect that, like us, you will be captivated by the beauty, power and symbolism of these objects.
