Description
Kay Nielsen's colour illustrations for East of the Sun and West of the Moon (1914) A set of 25 blank Greeting Cards showing the suite of colour illustrations for this very rare vintage book The current offering is for a set of 25 blank Greeting Cards showing the entire suite of colour illustrations produced by Kay Nielsen for East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Co-published by Hodder & Stoughton (London) and George H Doran & Co (New York) in 1914, East of the Sun and West of the Moon is an illustrated English adaptation of a selection of Norse legends from the Norske Folkeeventyr of Asbjörnsen and Moe. Nielsen's colour and monotone illustrations for East of the Sun and West of the Moon are considered among his masterpiece works. They were completed throughout 1913 and 1914 and as with his images for In Powder and Crinoline, the colour illustrations were reproduced with a 4-colour process. Copies of the 1st Edition of East of the Sun and West of the Moon - as illustrated by Kay Nielsen - are rare and thus, expensive - typically selling for in excess of US$3,500. The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards East of the Sun and West of the Moon "Well, mind and hold tight by my shaggy coat, and then there's nothing to fear," said the Bear, so she rode a long, long way. The Lassie and her Godmother She could not help setting the door a little ajar, just to peep in, when - Pop! out flew the Moon. The Lassie and her Godmother He too saw the image in the water; but he looked up at once, and became aware of the lovely Lassie who sate there up in the tree. (Frontispiece) The Lassie and her Godmother Then he coaxed her down and took her home. The Lassie and her Godmother "Here are your children; now you shall have them again. I am the Virgin Mary." The Three Princesses of Whiteland "You'll come to three Princesses, whom you will see standing in the earth up to their necks, with only their heads out." The Three Princesses of Whiteland So the man gave him a pair of snow-shoes. Soria Moria Castle The King went into the Castle, and at first his Queen didn't know him, he was so wan and thin, through wandering so far and being so woeful. The Giant who had no Heart in his Body He took a long, long farewell of the Princess, and when he got out of the Giant's door, there stood the Wolf waiting for him. The Widow's Son When he had walked a day or so, a strange man met him. "Whither away?" asked the man. The Widow's Son But still the Horse begged him to look behind him. The Widow's Son And this time she whisked off the wig; and there lay the lad, so lovely, and white and red, just as the Princess had seen him in the morning sun. The Widow's Son The Lad in the Battle. The Three Princesses in the Blue Mountain Just as they bent down to take the rose a big dense snowdrift came and carried them away. The Three Princesses in the Blue Mountain No sooner had he whistled than he heard a whizzing and a whirring from all quarters, and such a large flock of birds swept down that they blackened all the field in which they settled. These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by Nielsen are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer). Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope. On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Arthur Rackham for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The art of Kay Nielsen Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) is considered among one of the leading artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among his contemporaries - on either side of the Atlantic - were artists including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogány, Maxfield Parrish, Harry Clarke and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen'). His illustrations from East of the Sun and West of the Moon are among his masterpieces and were produced in 1914. Following World War I, he produced other great works, including Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen, Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories from the Brothers Grimm and Red Magic. Nielsen also prepared illustrations for titles that were not fated for publication in books including images from his "Book of Death" suite and the illustrations for the tragic tale of Pierrot. Other Nielsen illustration were specially commissioned for The Illustrated London News, such as those that accompanied Perrault in Powder and Patch: Famous and Familiar Fairy Stories in their Proper Guise. Another three images appear to have been prepared in 1914 to accompany a version of The Monk of Fife - a romance of the days of Jeanne D'Arc (St Joan or Joan of Arc). A further suite of images was prepared prior to 1923 for a version of A Thousand and One Nights that was not published due to scarce resources in Denmark following World War I. Nielsen's illustrations are rich with Art Nouveau influences, in addition to incorporating design elements from other traditions. Art Nouveau and Meiji Era aesthetes (most noticeably in the form of what may be an homage to Hokusai's "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa") are clearly shown throughout East of the Sun and West of the Moon. His other work is similarly lavish while adopting slightly softer methods that are, to some degree, reminiscent of his earliest published work, In Powder and Crinoline.
