Description
Fairyland (Grenbry Outhwaite and Annie R Rentoul) Illustrated by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite   A set of 16 blank Greeting Cards showing the wonderful suite of colour illustrations prepared by Outhwaite to accompany the lovely tales of fairy-folk   The current offering is for a set of 16 blank Greeting Cards showing each of the tipped-in colour plates published in the 1st Edition of Outhwaite's illustrative interpretation of the tales and verses within Fairyland.   Outhwaite's suite of images are wonderful examples of her fairy-inspired style.   Vintage copies of Fairyland are rare and highly collectiable - typically selling for in excess of US$2,000 when available on the international market.     The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards   The Nightingale The Nightingale (Frontispiece) Fairy Frolic Fairy Frolic The Witch The Witch The Three Bears The Three Bears   The Princess and the Beggar Boy "They kissed farewell at the château gate" Serana: The Bush Fairy "Catching the moon on a rope of dewdrops" Serana: The Bush Fairy "On moonlight nights they danced" Serana: The Bush Fairy "Tossing up the rainbow bubbles"   Serana: The Bush Fairy The Nautilus Fairy Serana: The Bush Fairy The Glowlamp Fairy Serana: The Bush Fairy "They stood still in front of her" Serana: The Bush Fairy "Knew that the Spark Sprite must be flying"   Serana: The Bush Fairy The Butterfly Ferry Serana: The Bush Fairy Serana's Wedding The Shingle in Fairyland The Shingle in Fairyland The Revoke The Revoke   These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.   Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by Outhwaite are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer).   Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope.           On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Arthur Rackham for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.   The art of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite   Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (1888-1960) is one of the artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among her contemporaries were artists including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Willy Pogány, Warwick Goble, Maxfield Parrish, Harry Clarke and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen').   She was one of the first Australian illustrators to achieve international fame - and that fame was deserved with wonderfully whimsical images of fairies (often to be found playing kookaburras, koalas and kangaroos).   Outhwaite's first illustration was published by The New Idea in 1904 when she was just 15 years of age - it accompanied a story written by her older sister, Annie Rentoul. In the years that followed, the sisters collaborated on a number of stories. Following her marriage to Grenbry Outhwaite in 1909, too, she collaborated with her husband - most notably for The Enchanted Forest (1921) and Fairyland (1931). In a number of cases, her children - Robert, Anne, Wendy and William - served as models for her illustrations.       Spirit of the Ages   We expect that, like us, you will be captivated by the beauty, power and symbolism of these objects. Each vintage and antique item we offer is drawn from our Collection of objects d'art from the Medieval and Renaissance periods, the Russian Orthodox tradition and the Gothic Revival, fin de siecle, Pre-Raphælite, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. When we offer reproduction images, they are also based on artwork held in our Collection.                 The people behind the collection Rosemary and Douglas Colston     For all our eBay sales, we accept PayPal only - the fast, easy, and secure way to pay online.   We post through Australia Post and provide an airmail service for international sales as standard - and the purchaser of this lovely set of cards showing the artwork of Outhwaite will receive that service free of charge, regardless of domestic or international destination.   Payment is required within seven (7) days of the close of the Auction and our expectation is that shipping will occur within 48 hour of cleared payment (Australia Post advises that delivery to international destinations may be expected within 7-10 working days of despatch).   Every effort has been taken to describe the items accurately and thus, the items are sold as described.
