Description
English Fairy Tales (retold by Flora Annie Steel) Illustrated by Arthur Rackham in 1918 A set of 16 blank Greeting Cards showing the suite of color illustrations for this rare vintage book The current offering is for a set of 16 blank Greeting Cards showing each of the color illustrations prepared by Rackham for the 1st Edition of his interpretation of Flora Annie Steel's English Fairy Tales. English Fairy Tales is a lovely collection of well known and some more obscure fairy tales from England. The tales in Flora Annie Steel's retelling are "St George of Merrie England", "The Story of the Three Bears", "Tom-Tit-Tot", "The Golden Snuff-Box", "Tattercoats", "The Three Feathers", "Lazy Jack", Jack the Giant-Killer", "The Three Sillies", "The Golden Ball", "The Two Sisters", "The Laidly Worm", "Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Catskin", "The Three Little Pigs", "Nix Naught Nothing", "Mr and Mrs Vinegar", "The True History of Sir Thomas Thumb", "Henny-Penny", "The Three Heads of the Well", "Mr Fox", "Dick Wittington and His Cat", "The Old Woman and Her Pig", "The Wee Bannock", "How Jack Went Out to Seek His Fortune", "The Bogey-Beast", "Little Red Riding-Hood", "Childe Rowland", "The Wise Men of Gotham", "Caporushes", "The Babes in the Wood", "The Red Ettin", "The Fish and the Ring", "Lawkamercyme", Master of all Masters", "Molly Whuppie and the Double-Faced Giant", "The Ass, the Table, and the Stick", "The Well of the World's End" and "The Rose Tree". Rackham's suite of illustrations for English Fairy Tales - including both monotone and colour images - is delightful. Brimming with knights, dragons, giants and other characters from childhood tales, his contribution illustrates the tales in his wonderfully idiosyncratic style. 1st Edition copies of English Fairy Tales - as illustrated by Rackham - are rare and highly collectable. The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards The Story of the Three Bears Somebody has been at my porridge, and has eaten it all up! Tattercoats Tattercoats dancing while the gooseherd pipes Jack the Giant-Killer The giant Cormoran was the terror of all the country-side Jack the Giant-Killer Taking the keys of the castle, Jack unlocked all the doors Jack the Giant-Killer The giant Galligantua and the wicked old magician transform the duke's daughter into a white hind The Two Sisters Tree of mine! O Tree of mine! Have you seen my naughty little maid? Jack and the Beanstalk Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman Catskin She went along, and went along, and went along Mr and Mrs Vinegar Mr and Mrs Vinegar at home Mr and Mrs Vinegar And that is the story of Mr and Mrs Vinegar The Three Heads of the Well They thanked her and said good-bye, and she went on her journey Dick Wittington and His Cat Many's the beating he had from the broomstick or the ladle Dick Wittington and His Cat When Puss saw the rats and mice she didn't wait to be told The Bogey-Beast "Well!" she chuckled, "I am in luck!" Caporushes She sate down and plaited herself an overall of rushes and a cap to match The Fish and the Ring The fisherman and his wife had no children, and they were just longing for a baby These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by Rackham are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer). Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope. On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Arthur Rackham for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The art of Arthur Rackham Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is considered among one of the leading artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among his contemporaries - on either side of the Atlantic - were artists including Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogány, Maxfield Parrish, Harry Clarke and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen'). Rackham's illustrations are characterised by a sinuous pen line softened with muted watercolour - a feature that is typical of the Art Nouveau aesthete. His forests are looming with frightening grasping roots, his fair maidens are sensuous - yet somehow chaste - and his ogres and trolls ugly enough to repluse, but with sufficient good nature not to frighten.
